Nine cameo lava bracelet, dating from about 1860 - 1870. This bracelet is in very good condition and is a very wearable 7 1/4" in length, 3/4" in width.
Each cameo has been individually carved and set in an 800 silver (tested) bezel. Each is unique; a profile of a lovely woman carved in relief. This bracelet has a good range of natural color from very dark gray, reddish brown, tan to a light buff. The relief is higher than average, and although there is a small amount of wear, the features on each portrait are distinct. Lava is a softer material, and many of these old cameos do show extensive wear. There are no cracks or chips. Each cameo is shown in the close-up photos.
There is a pressure clasp, which works well. I have not polished the silver.
Carved lava jewelry was a popular souvenir for visitors to Italy, especially the Napoli and Pompeii area,in the mid 1800's. It was a voyage that was only undertaken by the wealthy, and the trip often lasted a year or more.
