Charming Victorian portrait brooch, 2" x 1 3/4". It is a detail from one of Elisabeth Vigee LeBrun's self portraits.
Vigee LeBrun (1755 - 1842) was the best-known female portraitist of 18th century France. She was a favorite of queen Marie Antoinette, and many of her subjects included the French aristocracy. Her paintings remained popular throughout the Victorian era.
This brooch dates from about 1890 - 1900. Like most classically-inspired portrait brooches of the era, it began with a transfer on porcelain and finished by hand. It is in very good condition, with only the slightest of surface wear - truly excellent condition considering the age of the piece. It has a brass backing and c-clasp.
