Turn of the century watch pin, 1 1/8" x 7/8". (29mm x 21mm). It is ornate,in keeping with the late Victorian style.
The pin is engraved with the initials GEF in Spencerian script. It is gold plated and marked SM & S. I cannot find much information about this company, but they made gold plated watch pins, fobs and similar items in the late 1800's and very early 1900's.
100 years ago, the wrist watch was virtually unknown. Gentlemen had pocket watches and ladies wore watch pins. Today,a watch pin will hold a special charm, locket or little jewel. The hook on the reverse makes it easy to change without tools.
