Lovely carved cross of edelweiss flowers, 1 3/4" x 1 3/8". French ivory is a form of creamy white celluloid made with a grain to simulate natural ivory. The cross is hand carved, and the flower centers painted in mossy green, just like the real flower.
In German, “edel” means noble and “weiss” is white. The symbolic meanings of the edelweiss flower are daring, courage and noble purity, signifying the flower’s ability to withstand harsh climates and from its pure white coloring.”
The cross dates from about 1930 - 1940, and was made in Switzerland or Austria. The reverse has a c-clasp, attached to the pin with tiny screws. Condition is excellent.
A thoughtful and unique gift for Easter or Christmas.
