Tin Kreamer #2 spice box, circa 1890. This spice box has the deep red and black original finish, and all parts are present. The box is 11" x 8" and 4 1/2" high. It has a handle at the top and a front latch which can hold a lock.
Insides are 6 rectangular tin boxes, labeled for various spices; mace, ginger, cinnamon, allspice, cloves and nutmeg. Each is 3 3/8" 3 3/4" and 2 3/4" high, not including the knob. Some of the boxes have a just bit of spice left. The nutmeg grater is still present, attached to the inner lid.
While the box shows some wear, it is in the best shape of any Kreamer spice box I have seen. On the outer box, there is wear to the paint and 2 minor dents. The box still opens and closes as it should. Inside, there is minor wear to the back paint, but the lettering on each small box is in excellent condition. There is overall wear - please see the photos and feel free to ask questions. There is some discoloration of the tin on the interior of the smaller boxes. Best of all, the nutmeg grater is present - this is often missing. The spice box is all original finish, and it has not been painted or refinished in any way.
In the Victorian era, exotic spices were increasingly available, but at a cost. Most were imported from India and the Far East via Britain. The contents of this box would have been precious - thus the need for a lock!
I chose to leave the bits of spice. It you have allergies or concerns, I will be happy to clean the individual boxes.
