Charcoal sad iron, circa 1880 - 1890. In the 1800's "sad" meant heavy, and indeed these irons were! This iron is large, 8" x 3 1/2" and 7" high, and heavy, nearly 5 pounds, without the charcoal to heat the iron.
The top opens to insert the smoldering coals. There is a removable grate inside and a back latch to dispose of ash. The top has an ornate design, with Romulus and Remus (mythological founders of Rome), beneath their nursing mother wolf. The initial M appears below the handle.
The previous owner and collector believes this iron was made by Marinelli Ironworks of Agnone, Italy. I have not been able to confirm this, but Marinelli has been producing cast iron goods for over 1,000 years.
This sad iron is in very good condition, with no missing parts. There is wear to the wooden handle and mild oxidation.
This will fit in a large flat rate priority box. A medium flat rate box would be a tight fit, but I'll consider this option.
We are always happy to combine orders when possible. Free gift wrap available on many smaller items.
