This little doll was purchased in Belgium in 1965. She is a little lace maker, seated in a chair with a table, four lace bobbins and a piece of lace in progress. She wears a lace cap, glasses, wooden clogs and a gray velvet dress trimmed in lace.
The doll is celluloid or plastic, about 4" x 3" x 2 1/2" in the seated position. She is in very good condition.
Belgium has been a center of lace-making since the mid 1500's. Hand made Belgian bobbin lace was prized for its delicacy and beauty. The art requires many bobbins (not just four) and hours of time to produce a few inches. Although only a few of the old lace-makers remain, there are patient souls who take this up as a hobby. This doll may have been a souvenir from a lace museum or exhibit.
