Unique English Sterling Silver Horse Trophy. The trophy is in the form of a salver or small tray with a scalloped border and three feet. It was awarded by the Arab Horse Society and features an engraved horse above a ribbon inscribed in Arabic. The trophy or award was for third place in "The Tarif Stakes" race. The race took place at the historic Kempton Park Racecourse which is located in Sunbury-on-Thames, Surrey, Southwest of London (near Heathrow Airport). The tray is dated September 1991.
The piece is hallmarked with English sterling hallmarks that indicate the piece was made in Sheffield in 1991. The maker's mark is FH in a circle, which appears to be the more modern mark for Francis Howard, Ltc. who first registered the mark in 1901. Francis Howard is listed as working on Trafalgar Street, Sheffield. The firm still appears to be in business today.
The tray weighs 5.25 OzT and measures 7/8" tall and 6" in diameter. It is in great shape with some light scratching from normal wear. A wonderful piece for collectors of horse racing memorabilia or for someone who simply needs a nice sterling tray for holding jewelry.
