Simply breathtaking. This gorgeous Bag by Josef is one of the rarest, most beautiful original, Beaded Box bags to be found anywhere. From the early-nineteen thirties on, Bags by Josef, of Gold Seal Importers, were the ultimate in luxurious beaded handbags and accessories. All Bags by Josef were very, very expensive. From New York City, these fine treasures were seen in the top, most prestigious, high end stores at the time such as Saks Fifth Avenue.

Today, Bags by Josef are highly collectible with the models hand-beaded in Belgium, such as this circa 1935 gem, and from France the most prized. This Josef is a very large model and it is in excellent condition. It is also from a private collection.

When you first look and hold this bag, you feel the sheer weight and the quality overall. The bright Soft White Caviar Glass Beads glow with brilliance. The body of the bag is firm and the beads are in place. Then undulating pattern of the beads really sets it off. Lift the flap to see a spotless clean and flawless, White silk interior. No odors of age, no ink, and no shattering of the silk.

There is a single slip pocket and the original tag is present and clearly reads “Bag by Josef,” “Hand Beaded in Belgium.” It is spacious inside. Also, from long ago, there are two, vintage domed, straight pins. One is by the tag and the other, just on the right inside. Back in the Twenties and Thirties, it was customary to carry a few straight pins for your scarf or hat. The pins are harmless and I left them in place.

On the outside, the flap is firm and the beads are spotless clean. The hidden snap works perfectly. The thick, beaded handle is in itself, a work of art. The undulating pattern of the beads is carried on the strap. The round strap is thick and supple with no soiling or loss of beads. No doubt that this was a bag carried with care and or with gloves.

This is without question, a very fine, investment grade Josef.

With only a few beads missing, it is remarkable for a bag approaching eighty-years-old. What is a good thing is the missing beads are on the flap edge on the ends and can easily be replaced. Another testament of the outstanding quality of this Josef.

The Bag by Josef Box Bags are very rare and to see this beautiful bag is absolutely wonderful. Not many of these were made and even fewer exist today.

The dimensions are 6 ¾ “L x 5”H x 3 ½ “D and the handle has a 4 ½ “drop.
