Truly, one of the most charming Beaded Evening Bags is this lovely, pleated gem. Made in France, the size, style, craftsmanship clearly indicates it was painstakingly created between the 1930’s and mid-1940’s. Resplendent in rich, thick Jet Black fabric, it is crowned with a dazzling display of beads with three palates bursting in color with Champlevé enameling.
There were two types of enameling; Cloisonné and Champlevé with the differences mainly being in how the depressions to hold the enamel are achieved. These decorative techniques have been used since 500 and before in some eras. Cloisonné Enameling is created by making low areas by using small rods of metal, whereas Champlevé Enameling, is created by making deliberate depressions, creating a “raised field” hence the name in French; Champlevé. Then filling those areas with a vitreous enamel and heating in a kiln until it is fused, then polished. It is no wonder why items with Champlevé Enameling, if reasonably cared for, can still be so beautiful after many centuries.
As a collector of many fine vintage handbags from the early twentieth century on from around the world, I do have considerable knowledge of them, but there is always one that stands out. This fine, collectible treasure is one of them. From the private collection, this magnificent bag is pristine vintage.
When you first hold this heirloom, the quality and richness of the finest superfine, felt fabric soothes the touch. The colors immediately will get your attention. The frame is adorned with Golden metal micro beads in strings, Soft White and Pink mini-hexagon beads, pearlescent seed beads, and pebble-sized faux-pearls in a line at the top and on the clasp.
At the top are the three floral panels with Champlevé enameling in the colors of Fuchsia, Black, Green, and Marine depicting a vine. The panels shine with brilliance and there is no chipping or loss of color.
Lift the clasp to see the shimmering Black satin lining. No odors of age or old perfume, it is spotless clean. There is a slip pocket on one side and on the other is a gusseted pocket where the original, and still reflective mirror resides.
The underside of the frame shows the intricate work it took to make this fine bag. All of the wiring is in place. The fabric is spotless clean and what is seen in the pictures is some wayward lint from the cloth I used when I shot the pictures.
Also, in a couple of the pictures, I didn’t close it all the way. This closes with three clicks. I partially closed in my haste. The handmade frame is straight and it closes true.
Outside, the felt fabric is spotless clean with not one tear anywhere. The pleats are full, gathered beautifully, and attaches to the frame securely. All of the beads are in place with no loose threads. This is a beautiful bag from every angle. There is no dullness on the frame and the gold plating is full, as it should be.
Wearing this gem with gloves to any formal event and it will be the crowning touch. It has had the absolute best of care throughout its life and it shows. Continue that tradition and this sterling beauty will last many more generations.
The measurements are 8 ½ “L (at the widest point) x 6”H and properly tissue stuffed, it is 3”D. The gilded chain affords a 12 ½ “drop or 25” long.
As always, this fine evening bag will come to you shipped with the utmost care via USPS Priority Mail or your choice of shippers indicated with insurance.
