Straight from the early 1950’s, Train box handbags were not only fashionable, they were practical as well. This extremely rare DeLill Tapestry Steamer Trunk Train Bag from Italy exemplifies the best of them.
DeLill, founded in 1941 by two sisters, Desire and Lilly Rotkel in New York City. Their company, DeLill and later; DeLill Creations made some of the finest handbags of the time. This Steamer is truly unique in that the pattern is in the true Art-Nouveau pattern and it is in pristine condition. It is also from a private collection.
This is a genuine Tapestry Needlepoint as opposed to printed tapestry and the quality is evident throughout. Every stitch is in place and it is spotless clean inside and out. The tapestry is padded for a soft feel. Nowhere does this DeLill look over sixty-five-years-old but, it is and it looks fabulous.
Flip the T-bar latch and the lids open smoothly and you are greeted with a spotless clean, shimmering Bronze Faille lined interior. Not one mark or stain anywhere. There is one slip pocket and on it is the name. It is faint but still there. In those days, gold dust was used and over time, the maker’s name flaked away.
Very seldom do you ever see one of these that is not dented or stained but this gem sets evenly, has no dents, and is tight with no looseness. Even the handles are still tight, which is remarkable. The handles still have the gold-tone and that is remarkable. Everything gleams with brilliance and the tapestry is spectacular.
The pictures simply cannot capture the sheer beauty of this DeLill. You must see it in the real and you will smile when you do.
The hinges are tight as well and this steamer rests evenly on four feet.
A true vintage collectible, this DeLill Steamer Trunk is one that you must see to appreciate. It will bring many compliments and continue to rise in value.
The dimensions are: 8”L x 6 ½ “H x 5 ½ “D with a 3” drop at the handles.
