This set of four original 1956 Elvis Presley tin litho pins bring back a day a girl can't forget.
It was September 9, 1956. Elvis was about to make his first television appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show. I was 12 years old. I was a crazed Elvis fan. I couldn't wait to see my idol LIVE on TV. But my parents had other ideas. They changed the channel to watch something else. Though I was ordinarily 'a good girl', obeying my parents, they'd picked the wrong moment to switch channels. I flung myself onto the floor and threw an uncontrollable tantrum the likes of which had never been seen in that house. It worked. I got to see my hero sing but his 'controversial' hip gyrations were censored by CBS. You can't have everything.
These pins are as 'early Elvis' as you can get. These came in gumball machines in 1956. These are lithographed tin with graphics that include...LOVE ME TENDER, DON'T BE CRUEL, I LIKE ELVIS, and YOU'RE NOTHIN' BUT A HOUND DOG.
Pins measure 7/8 inch across. Each edge is marked GREEN DUCK CO. CHICAGO - MADE IN U.S.A. - 1956 E.P.E. (for Elvis Presley Enterprises).
Very minor dings to the litho. Overall, the four pins are in excellent vintage condition. My parents eventually learned to like Elvis music. I moved on to the Beatles. I never threw another tantrum again.
