Over the years, we've had a lot of odd things. In fact, when we had our antique shop in Greenwich Village from 1969 to 1988, we were known as the 'store that buys everything but the kitchen sink'. Our motto was 'We've got the stuff your mother made you throw out'. So it came as no surprise that this item found its way through our door.
These are 8 paper towel / napkins that came from the Ronald Reagan Inaugural Ball in 1985. Each one is stamped with the Eagle SEAL OF THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES.
Folded as they came, they measure 4 1/2 by 10 inches. Opened up, each is about 16 1/2 by 20 inches.
How we got them...a very clever, enterprising young man who was one of the serving staff at the Ball, 'cleaned up' the unused napkins, plastic cups, swizzle sticks, etc. that were made for the occasion. We bought them all. Most of the items did have the REAGAN name on them. The napkins did not. But these were there, just waiting to mop up some VIP's spill, or dab at a dignitary's chin.
All 8 napkins are in unused excellent vintage condition. Nice quality paper (but, of course...the taxpayer's were paying.)
(A personal Reagan-related story. Ron Reagan Jr. and I worked out at the same gym. He and I had a contest one day to see who could do more crunches on the incline ab bench. I can't remember who won so I guess he did. I know I gave it my all and couldn't sit up for days. Ron and his wonderful wife Doria (she died in 2014) were all set to come to our house for dinner one night but 'Dad' Ronald requested their presence at the California Ranch. Too bad...we had a great menu planned though the Secret Service would have had to taste everything first.)
