Something you don't find often...a great vintage piece of jewelry by Finnish designer Pentti Sarpaneva (1925 - 1978). He was a trendsetter in Scandinavian jewelry design, working with different materials, inspired by everything from nature to boat studs, laces, and leftovers from the zipper industry. His designs were out of the box and his favorite material was bronze.
This Sarpaneva bronze necklace is typical of his creative prowess, combining shapes and symbols that are fresh and mysterious.
The pendant measures 1 7/8 inches across by 4 1/2 inches long with the ring bail. The bronze link chain measures 25 inches with a hook closure so you can determine your preferred length when you clasp it. The necklace weighs 72.3 grams. The back is signed P. SARPANEVA.
The necklace has a gilded bronze surface with recesses that are oxidized and darkened for contrast. Slight wear to the gilded bronze and some patina showing in the textured grooves on top piece. It's all part of the aging of bronze. Overall in excellent vintage condition.
In the 1960s and 1970s, Sarpaneva partnered with other well-known Scandinavian jewelry makers including Kalevala Koru, Turun Hopea and Kumelan lasitehdas.
