We've developed a crush on the crushed stone designs of Mexican jewelry. They're kind of like snowflakes with no two ever identical.
This old Taxco pin and / or pendant was made with bits of crushed turquoise, lapis, malachite...any colorful old stone bits that were left from larger cut stones.
Known as 'chip inlay' the crushed stones are paved into designs shaped out of (in this case) sterling silver. (Often, they're made of mixed metals.) Here, the silver lines create a maze. All roads lead to the scalloped sterling edge.
The 'pindant' measures 1 5/8 inches across by 2 1/4 inches long with the dangles. Weighs 16.4 grams.
Back is hallmarked with the Eagle 3 mark. Also STERLING - TAXCO - MEXICO and the initials of the silversmith...looks like TC?. There's a secure rollover clasp and attached bail for a chain.
Handmade. Excellent vintage condition. Circa 1950s. Watch out because once you develop a crush on this unique Mexican folk art craft work, you're hooked forever.
