Back in the 1970s - 1980s when we lived in NYC, we had a pretty nice collection of Rebajes jewelry and metalware. When we moved to Florida in 1988, we sold most of our collections to some happy customers who promised us 'visitation rights' if we ever came back to visit.
This Rebajes box 'retired' to Florida with us, packed away in a warehouse carton. We thought it was long gone but it recently appeared like an old friend, much to our pleasant surprise.
Francisco (Frank) Rebajes boxes are not very common. This one is a heavy gauge two-piece fully signed copper box with a lid that has a thick coiled copper handle.
The box measures 4 3/8 by 3 3/4 inches. It's 1 1/8 inches high but with the handle, it's about 2 inches high.
The inside is stamped...ORIGINAL HAND WROUGHT DESIGN - REBAJES. The Rebajes company was based in New York from 1932 to about 1960.
The box lid has some age-related spots on the surface...some may clean up with the right stuff but we leave it to buyer as we don't want to harm the natural aged patina. There's one raised pinpoint on the lid, coming from an indent on the inside...maybe a slip of a tool.
Overall condition is excellent vintage, as expected from a mid-century metal piece. It's a rare and fantastic Rebajes trinket / jewelry box. And please... can we get visitation rights...just in case we're ever in your area?
