At first, we thought this was an old fur / dress clip depicting the caricature of a Black Americana Mammy. But Mammy never looked this angry. She was always kind and smiling. So we were greatly relieved to discover that this isn't Mammy afterall (her warm stereotyped commercialized image is safe). This snarling face with Mammy's bandana is actually a PIRATE! Aarrrggg...how did we miss it?
He's a rare figural fur / dress clip, unsigned but important enough to be featured in collectible costume jewelry books. Clip is hand-painted on heavy silvertone metal. His black face is in stark contrast to his white eyes, teeth and red tongue.
The clip measures 1 3/8 inches across by 1 3/4 inches high. The back has a strong hinged two-prong clip. The hand-painted red bandana has some dings to the paint. The brass earring is still there but may be missing a couple of chain dangles.
This unique pirate clip is in excellent vintage condition. It's circa 1930. It's a rare old Black Americana / Blackamoor piece of jewelry.
