It does a lot more than hold your pants up. This old Mexican handmade belt buckle is a work of art in sterling silver and inlaid stones.
The center is an etched Aztec calendar. It's set against black onyx which has etched sterling inlay scroll work and iridescent mosaics of genuine abalone shell.
This buckle measures 3 1/4 inches across by 2 inches high. It weighs 58.4 grams (about 2 ounces)...a good hefty piece.
The back has two bars, one that holds the leather...the other side with a prong for the belt hole. It's all sturdy and solidly attached.
The buckle is unsigned indicating this is an early piece before Mexican hallmarks were used. It's in excellent condition. Equally attractive on a man's or woman's belt. One other way for a woman to wear this...as a fantastic pendant. Have a jeweler solder down the prong and it becomes the loop for a chain. Incredible around the waist...or the neck. Circa 1960.
