This is an unusual old Mexican pin or pendant made of sterling silver.
The small pin has a scalloped wire edge dotted with silver beads. The center domes up and is decorated with marcasite stones. The striking thing is that the stones don't seem to be set INTO the openings, but rather, they seem to rise OUT of the openings. The entire center has been has been either pressed out of silver or handwrought out of silver (repousse) with the backing as overlay. It's not your usual Mexican piece.
The pin measures 1 1/2 inches each way. It weighs 10.8 grams. The back has both a secure rollover clasp and the attached bail for a chain to wear as a pin or pendant.
The hallmarks are not fully impressed into the back. We can make out the 925 and the MEX. Several other letters appear to be the maker's mark. An ~R~ is the only one that's clear.
This unique old Mexican jewel is left with its unpolished patina so you can decide how you like it. Excellent vintage condition. Circa 1950s.
