In this crazy world, there are days we should all be wearing one of these.
This Hamsa pendant is a palm-shaped amulet popular through the ages in the Middle East and North Africa. The Hamsa was commonly used in jewelry and wall hangings, used as a sign of protection to provide defense against the evil eye. The symbol was shared by Jews, Christians and Muslims. It's been theorized that its origins lie in Ancient Egypt or Carthage (modern-day Tunisia) and may have been associated with the Goddess Tanit.
Now that we're all 'goddesses' trying to avoid that 'evil eye', this pendant is a welcome adornment. It's made of sterling silver with a five-finger shape and an opalescent stone that gives off an iridescent glow. Each 'finger' is decorated with a raised silver bead.
The hand pendant measures 1 1/4 by 2 inches. It hangs from a sterling silver bead chain. The chain is marked 925. The hand is unmarked but was acid-tested for sterling. The necklace weighs 12.5 grams. Unpolished vintage patina.
Excellent vintage condition. Hamsa on board. Evil...take a hike!
