If someone put me in front of a choice between a platinum diamond necklace and this one, my gut instinct would be to lunge for this one. Watermelons and mini baskets with mini people inside. It's the epitome of uniqueness while those diamond necklaces are everywhere.
This one (she wrote, clutching her heart)...now, this is a piece to lunge for. These were old Mexican souvenir trinkets with colorful red and green watermelons (some made of hand-painted metal and a couple of added melons in wood or resin). Little tiny baskets are filled with little people (a fourth basket is empty). These were probably sold on the streets of Mexico City...catching the eye of the color-struck tourista.
The necklace measures 26 inches long. It's 2 3/4 inches long at center. There does seem to be a charm missing on one side...could be a basket or a watermelon. You can add any appropriate charm to the fray...it's that kind of folksy hand concocted piece.
A couple of the metal melons have chips to the green paint. The spring ring clasp is a replacement. The link chain with open silvertone beads has a nicely-age patina. These seem to be silver on copper.
Not perfect. Not as valuable as platinum and diamonds. But oh so much more personality.
