The great Taxco silver artists who've come and gone at Los Castillo have been making highly creative and collectible jewelry since 1939.
This Los Castillo bird pin is just one brilliant design that's worth a look. First of all, you have to REALLY look to notice that it's a bird...or some kind of flying creature with a beak, slicked back crest, and squinty eye opening. (Duh...at first we had it upside down and wondered what it was.)
The sterling silver frame is filled with abalone shell inlay that's iridescent with colors. The inlay is seamless...expertly done.
The pin measures 2 1/8 by 1 3/4 inches. The back has a secure rollover clasp. It's marked 344 (style number) HECHO EN MEXICO - LOS CASTILLO - TAXCO - SCL. The pin weighs 12 grams.
Any surface wear is only noticed when highly magnified (as in our close-ups) and/or the light exaggerates it. Overall, this Taxco pin is in excellent vintage condition. Circa 1960.
