This small 14K solid gold tie clasp is decorated with a finely carved hardstone cameo of a classic Roman profile.
The clasp measures 3/4 inch across by 1/2 inch high at the cameo. This size clasp was probably made during the 1920s when men's neckties were thin...about 2 3/8 inches...and made of very fine silk. The quality of the man was often judged by the quality of his silk tie. And a fine gold clasp certainly would add to that. There were also knit wool neckties in the 1920s...made of one long 2 inch thin strip with fringed or straight bottom edge. This style comes back every couple of decades. You can't keep a good skinny tie down...it always finds popularity.
This solid yellow gold clasp weighs 3.3 grams. It's still in its original hard box. The back of the clip is marked 14K.
Excellent vintage condition. Circa 1920.
