This fine sterling silver desk accessory was made by Sampson Mordan & Co. of London in 1903.
The elegant Edwardian piece actually combines three functions in one. There's the magnifying glass at the top with a very good optical lens. The length of the handle is part of the mechanical pencil at the other end. The pencil / magnifier sits in the base which has a potential seal at the bottom. It was never engraved with initials and is still blank if you'd care to engrave your initials for a seal.
The length of the entire piece is 7 inches high. The base is 3/4 inch across. The pencil / magnifier measures 5 3/4 inches long. The entire piece weighs 65 grams.
The base is hallmarked SM&C with English hallmarks (worn). These are for Sampson Mordan & Co. who specialized in mechanical pencils and silver smalls that were sold by retailers such as Asprey & Sons. The magnifier stem is also stamped S. MORDAN - STERLING.
There's a slight indent bump to the base (visible in photo) which could be pushed out with the proper know-how / tool.
This rare English sterling desk item is in excellent antique condition. The only other one we found sold in London recently for $1799.
