A wonderful bird is the pelican,
His bill will hold more than his belican,
He can take in his beak
Enough food for a week
But I'm damned if I see how the helican!
This vintage pelican pin is made of solid sterling silver set with marcasite stones. This figural has so much detail...from that food storage bill to those webbed feet and then all the feathers in between.
Pin measures 1 1/4 inches across by 1 3/4 inches high. The back is marked 925. Pin weighs 6.4 grams. Secure rollover clasp. Excellent vintage condition. Circa 1970s.
This limerick was written in 1910 by Dixon Lanier Merritt (1879–1972) who was an American poet and humorist. He was a newspaper editor for the Tennessean, Nashville's morning paper and President of the American Press Humorists Association. Had Merritt lived to see this great pelican pin, he might have gone on to wax poetic with a few more stanzas.
