It's more than just a beautiful old pendant made of sterling silver, genuine turquoise and coral. It's also a prayer box, called a Gau (also spelled Ghau or Gao). The Gau is a Tibetan Buddhist amulet container made of metal and worn as jewelry. It's made to hold a written prayer, mantra, or an amulet. In Victorian times, a locket of a loved one's hair was popular.
This Gau pendant opens from the back which slides out. It measures 7/8 inch across by 1 1/4 inches high. The inside compartment is about 5/8 by 3/4 inches. The back is stamped 925.
The Gau hangs from a fine sterling silver snake chain marked 925 Italy. Together, they weigh 15 grams. Excellent vintage condition. Circa 1970s.
