About the show - The show opened on Broadway in April 1968 and ran for 1,750 performances. Since it was the era of sex, drugs and rock and roll, the show broke many rules and new ground in musical theater. Some of the songs from its score became Top 10 hits and the film version was released in 1979. A Broadway revival opened in 2009, getting strong reviews and winning the Tony Award and Drama Desk Award for best revival of a musical. In 2008, Time magazine wrote, "Today Hair seems, if anything, more daring than ever."
On a personal note, Hair's director was Tom O'Horgan. He lived across the street from our antique shop in Greenwich Village and was a good customer who collected musical instruments...the more unusual, the better. On New Year's Eve, Tom would throw a party in his 4000 square foot loft. Every one got an instrument to play at midnight. It was a mind and ear blowing cacophony of sound. Fortunately, the walls were thick and Tom always invited his neighbors. A good time was had by all and especially us who got to see the old instruments actually being played...sort of.
