We see what we want to see. So I saw a pendant. It was in a jewelry case and it jumped out at me with its colorful enamel work on brass and curvy shape. When I got home and looked at it carefully, I saw the little ball feet at the bottom and knew it was something else. A candle holder. French. Champlevé enamel. Colorful. Beautiful. With a round ring where you'd stick the candle. Such a waste. Imagine scraping the wax off the enamel. Only in a must-use hurricane emergency. No...no...no. This is a pendant. We proclaim it thus.
This former candle holder is the perfect size and shape to be worn as a pendant. It measures 1 3/4 by 4 1/4 inches. It weighs 22 grams.
The enamel work is colorful and shows a moderate degree of wear. The brass patina is beautifully aged. All this needs is a chain. There are two openings at the top so a chain can easily be added. And then this gorgeous French piece from the late 1800s will get its true due...displayed around the neck for all to admire. And then you can always tell them how it began life in the late 1800s. And if there's ever a hurricane....you're prepared.
