If there was one iconic slogan of the turbulent 1960s anti-war era, it was this one...WAR IS NOT HEALTHY FOR CHILDREN AND OTHER LIVING THINGS.
This original 1968 pendant was created by the group, Another Mother for Peace, founded in 1967 by a group of women strongly opposed to the war in Vietnam. Their mission was to create a non-partisan, non-profit organization “to educate women to take an active role in eliminating war as a means of solving disputes between nations, people and ideologies.” Dedicated to the principle that war is obsolete, AMP encouraged its members to do Peace Homework by writing to elected government officials to express their desire for peace.
Their logo was a sunflower with the words: “War is not healthy for children and other living things” created by Lorraine Schneider. This profound statement appeared on posters, bumper stickers, note cards, letter seals, key rings, and this gold-tone pendant worn by supporters. This sunflower logo and its powerful message helped make Another Mother for Peace one of the most effective anti-war voices of its generation.
This original pendant measures 1 1/4 inches across by 2 inches high with bail. The back is marked ANOTHER MOTHER FOR PEACE - BEVERLY HILLS, CALIF. - 1968. Light wear to edges. Overall in excellent vintage condition. This message STILL resounds today.
