This is one frustrating fabulous old sterling silver bird pin. Frustrating, because there's only the barest hint of a maker's mark on the back but nothing that helps identify the creative silversmith who made this (we're sure it's someone good). Or even the country it came from. Based on research and previous items we've sold, this is probably Taxco - Mexican or it might be Scandinavian. This also looks like the work of Peruvian artist Graziella Laffi who made a lot of bird pins with jewel eyes. Frustrating, because we couldn't find another just like it to help us identify this one.
Frustration venting over. Let's get to the 'fabulous' part. It's a great pin. Solid sterling silver. Big...3 1/2 inches long by 1 1/2 inches high. Design?...streamlined Modernist. This bird is actually two birds with one barely blocking out the other.
The eye...it's a big white agate glass marble with ~V~ shaped lines in the glass. It looks at you. You look at it. It's a mutual admiration society.
The pin weighs 21.5 grams. The only flaw we see is that the rollover piece of the clasp is gone so the pin just sits in the double ~C~ which appears to be secure enough. A jeweler could always do this easy repair. Overall, this mystery bird is one you want in your nest. Excellent vintage condition.
