Rare Art Deco Mercury Glass Butler's Ball Mirrored Spy Glass
Any good butler worth his bowtie and starched collar would be using this Butler's Ball to keep an eye on the guests. The mirrored Mercury glass ball creates a well-rounded eyeful of the goings-on at a dinner party...or after the dinner party REAL party. These were popular during the Victorian era, into the Art Deco era...wherever affluent people had a butler who needed some visual aid.
This rare 1930s ball was made by Charles F. Zeller of West Virginia. It's marked on the black textured glass base. The ball measures 3 inches across the glass by 5 inches high with base.
Mercury glass is a double walled glass where silver / mercury is fused to the inside creating a mirror effect. This one is in excellent vintage condition with no issues except for the photographer who we're keeping an eye on. A rare unusual piece.
