From a 1984 New York Times Style section article...."HOW, if you happen to be a young jewelry designer, do you stage a fashion show in which your jewelry will not only be noticed, but even outshine the clothes it's being worn with?
The answer is for the models to wear as little as possible, of course. That, anyway, was the way Richard Serbin, the young jewelry designer in question, orchestrated it last week when he staged a show entitled ''The American Dream'' at the Limelight.
Mr. Serbin's jewelry exhibited a dazzling range of design from Pop Art Olympic medals, some worn on ribbons, to rhinestone medallions, to ropes of Chanel-like pearls and rhinestones, to gold belts with tassels. To show them, the models wore bathing suits by Julio, or, in the case of the pearls, the newest black, boat-neck, sleeveless body suit from Capezio, combined with white socks, black patent-leather tie shoes and berets. For a little more entertainment, Mr. Serbin added a group called the Crows, who used hand puppets in the shape of crows to dance and mime to the music on the runway."
Obviously, Richard Serbin was no ordinary jewelry designer. He created big bold pieces to be worn with clothes collections of the top fashion designers...Oscar de la Renta, Adolfo, Fabrice, Ball Blass, Nipon and others.
These oversized rhinestone clip-back earrings graced a runway but not sure which one it was. These gold-tone flowers are set with large clear rhinestone petals with one small aurora borealis stone in the center. They measure 2 3/8 inches across.
The backs are signed SERBIN. The clips are secure...I tried them on, danced around till I fell over and the earrings were still holding on. These are in excellent vintage condition. Circa mid-1980s.
Serbin's work is few and far between, hard to find, and always astounding. And you don't need hand puppets for a little more entertainment. (Another Serbin factoid...he worked for famous fine jeweler David Webb before starting his own company.)
