The enamel work on this old Chinese necklace just takes your breath away. Between the colors and the intricate wire work, the enamel almost looks like stained glass with the glow of the turquoise looking like light coming through. Birds and flowers cover the urn-shaped surface.
The enamel is on a plaque of sterling silver with a gold vermeil wash. It measures 2 inches across by 1 5/8 inches high. It has a lip all around the edge. The bottom has a row of small beads that are glass or actual jade, turquoise and black onyx. These small beads also make a linked chain that holds the pendant. It measures 20 inches around.
The necklace has no markings that we can see but we acid-tested it for sterling silver. It weighs 17.3 grams. The enamel work is excellent with no dings. Excellent vintage condition. One of the prettiest Chinese enamel pieces we've ever seen. Circa 1920s.
