These antique spectacles are also called 'Ben Franklins' because he wore eyeglasses that looked like these. He also invented bifocal eyeglasses in 1784.
These eyeglasses are from the late 1800s. The unique design includes retractable arms so you can adjust them to fit on your ears perfectly.
The frames are made of silver-tone metal...sturdier than the more common 'wire rims' of the era. These measure 4 1/8 inches across from hinge to hinge. They're 7/8 inch high. In those days, eyeglasses were made to enhance your vision so they just about covered the eye with not much importance placed on 'style'.
The glass is intact...actually magnifies and may work as they are for some people. The frames are solid...can be polished up as we left the patina as found. The arms slide in and out smoothly as needed. Overall, these 'Bengies' are in excellent antique condition.
