Rare 1950s SPUTNIK Satellite Earrings - Space Age Lucite Clips on Card
The launch of Sputnik marked the Dawn of the Space Age. And these clip back Lucite earrings were there...in a store.
History changed on October 4, 1957, when the Soviet Union successfully launched Sputnik I. The world's first artificial satellite was about the size of a beach ball (58 cm.or 22.8 inches in diameter), weighed only 83.6 kg. or 183.9 pounds, and took about 98 minutes to orbit the Earth on its elliptical path. That launch ushered in new political, military, technological, and scientific developments. While the Sputnik launch was a single event, it marked the start of the space age and the U.S.-U.S.S.R space race.
All things space related became the rage. These Lucite earrings are still on their original SATELLITE EARRINGS - SPUTNIKS card.
The earrings measure 1 inch across. They're filled with confetti silver and red stars. A cluster of confetti bits create a ball of Sun. The brass clip backs are a bit age tarnished but still have a good hold. The card is creased but intact. We took the earrings off the card to preserve both.
This is a great old novelty AND historical space item...as well as very out-of-this-world earrings.
