It's enough to make you want to get married...or remarried. This exquisite Mexican wedding cross carries the symbolism of the ages. Called a Yalalag Cross, this one is handwrought of sterling silver, ornate, and just downright beautiful.
The Yalalag Cross comes from San Juan Yalalag, Oaxaca, Mexico and its basic design predates the Conquest. This one consists of a central cross with a series of 3 smaller crosses hanging from the main cross. The small crosses are decorated with raised rope and flower centers. The main cross has that and more, including a center cabochon of goldstone or pyrite.
The cross measures 2 inches across by 2 7/8 inches high. It hangs from a fine 18-inch sterling silver chain. The chain is marked 925 ITALY.
The cross is hallmarked with the Eagle 1 mark, artist's initials...JCB TAXCO MEXICO - 925 STERLING. The pendant and chain weigh 19.5 grams. We haven't polished it...the old patina is lovely just as it is.
This Yalalag cross combines ancient tradition, Christianity, folk art and fine craftsmanship. And with any luck, wedded bliss too.
Circa 1960s. Excellent condition.
