Here's an impressive old pendant necklace from Rajasthan in Northern India. This is made of solid sterling silver and it weighs 97.8 grams.
The pendant is beautifully handcrafted with a simple design of three rings at sides and bottom and a genuine natural turquoise stone in the center. Dozens of little bells (ghrungrus) dangle along the bottom. This gives the necklace a charming tinkle. These bells were commonly attached to many Indian ornaments.
The pendant measures about 2 1/2 inches across by 2 inches high. It's almost 1/4 inch thick with the back side plain...just showing the hand hammered texture.
And that chain...it's original to the pendant with a special ~U~ shaped link at center for the pendant to hook into. It's a heavy chain with big sturdy links. Because the pendant is removable, you can wear the chain by itself or hook any pendant you have onto it. The clasp is a simple hook and eye.
The necklace chain measures 23.5 inches around. It's 6mm wide. Both chain and pendant have been acid-tested and come up sterling silver at every point. These old Indian high-grade silver pieces don't turn up often as now most are made of low grade or non silver metals.
This estate piece is circa mid-century. Excellent vintage condition.
