These Modernist inspired earrings were hand made by Mary Kanda in the early 1990s. Her canvas here is sterling silver. Her 'paint' is tiny colored glass beads imbedded in grout. Her labor-intensive mosaic work is precise, geometric and unique enough to be featured in a number of books and publications (see below).
These earrings are oval sterling silver plaques with two shades of mauve glass beads. Across the center is a row of tiny coral glass beads.
The earrings measure 7/8 inch across by 1 1/8 inches high. They weigh 10.9 grams. The backs have posts for pierced ears. One earring is hand signed KANDA 925.
These are in excellent vintage condition. Circa 1990. These are more than just meticulously designed earrings...they're beautiful mosaic art for your ears.
Kanda's work is featured in 'Color on Metal' by Tim McCreight and Nicole Bsullak, published by Guild Publishing, 2001 and in 'The Art of Jewelry Design' by Deborah Krupenia, Published by Quarry Books,1997. Kanda was the featured artist on the cover of 'Ornament', Vol. 30 No. 4, in 2007.
