These vintage earrings are hand-carved of bone (NOT ivory). These horse figures are in a sitting position.
The horse is a powerful symbol in Chinese culture. One of the most appealing animals in Chinese art is Night-Shining White, an impressive horse whose name came from his luminous moon-white coat. He was a favorite in the stable maintained by the Emperor Xuanzong, the most powerful ruler of the Tang dynasty (A.D. 618 to 907).
These earrings may be an homage to this famous Chinese horse. They measure 3/4 inch across by about 1 inch long with the genuine coral bead. The wires for pierced ears are newer. The carvings are vintage, circa 1950s. Excellent condition.
