Tiffany & Co. Sterling Silver Asparagus Tongs - Chrysanthemum Pattern - Pat. 1880
This exquisite piece of Tiffany & Co. sterling silver tableware is officially a rare individual asparagus tongs. It was designed with the Chrysanthemum pattern by Charles Grosjean and sold by Tiffany circa 1900. Chrysanthemum is one of Tiffany's most beautiful and desirable designs...a super star on any table.
The sides of the tongs are covered with chrysanthemum foliage and flowers in a raised repousse pattern.
The tongs measure 5 1/8 inches long. The 'scooper' blades are 1 5/8 inches across. Though curved to fit an asparagus stalk, these tongs can pick up any type of vegetable, cheese squares, olives, ice, etc. The tongs weigh 39.4 grams.
The inside is marked TIFFANY & CO. STERLING PAT. 1880. There's NO monogram and these are in overall excellent antique condition.
(On a historical table etiquette note - Individual asparagus tongs would be brought out and set with the course, including asparagus, and removed for the next course. The server would place the tongs to the right of the guest's plate, toward the top.)
