This vintage Navajo sterling silver sand-cast pin is a Yei Bi Chei...a holy figure in the Navajo culture. They are the human dancers impersonating the Yei deities for ceremonial purposes. They are the "keepers of the door to the other world" as one Navajo artist explained.
The pin measures 1 inch across by 2 1/8 inches high. It weighs 6.9 grams. It's unmarked but acid-tests for solid sterling. Back has a secure rollover clasp. Excellent condition. Circa 1970s. This unique Native American pin comes from a spiritual culture but fits right into the stylized Modernist genre.
