Be assured...this vintage trinket box is made of carved bone, NOT ivory. But the fine workmanship shows no distinction...just great talent. Its carver was Chinese or Japanese (we think the latter). The artist signed the box on the back in Asian characters.
While the sides of the box are etched and inked with leafy flowering plants, it's the top we like the most. Cats at play. The large cat fills up most of the lid with a stare that's somewhere between 'grumpy cat' and 'scaredy cat'. Looks like there's a kitten alongside who wants to play.
The box measures 2 by 1 3/8 inches at the bottom. It's 1 1/2 inches high. There's a small nick at bottom edge on the back side.
The bone has been polished and finished to a fine glossy patina, minimizing its natural porous composition. The box is in excellent vintage condition. Circa 1960s.
