This antique inkwell stand is bronzed cast iron. It shows the Doremus U.S. MAIL letter box that was designed in 1894. We're pretty sure that the actual mail box design did NOT come with two dogs at its pedestal base but there they are, waiting at the mail box that hides the inkwell.
The bulldog looks pretty friendly but the other dog (whose breed we can't guess) doesn't look so friendly with his tongue hanging out.
The base of the stand measures 5 5/8 inches each side. The mail box is 2 1/2 inches high and 1 1/2 inches from the side with base. It flips up and there's your glass inkwell which is removable.
The back of the stand is numbered (looks like) 4610. There are a couple of dings to the patina with a bit of verdigris...all in keeping with age and probable use. The glass inkwell insert is intact. This inkwell is a rare one as we couldn't find another like it on all of the Web.
