The Qilin ('chee-lin') is a mythical creature, sometimes referred to as the Chinese Unicorn. He represents wisdom and cosmic harmony. During the Qing Dynasty, Qilins were made by every silversmith and even government workers assigned to create these. They were often given as wedding gifts to promote happiness and fertility.
This vintage necklace features the two-sided Qilin with a happy, prosperous rider. It's made of 800/1000 Chinese silver (sterling is 925/1000).
The Qilin rides on a long necklace made of Hematite beads. Strands of the beads also dangle below.
The necklace measures about 28 inches around. The Qilin measures 2 3/4 inches across by 4 3/4 inches long with the beads. The hematite beads are 8mm wide with some larger ones at the bottom of the dangles. The necklace weighs 180 grams. There's no clasp...it just slides over the head. It's in excellent condition with a beautiful unpolished patina. Circa 1950s.
