The Qilin ('chee-lin') is a mythical creature, sometimes referred to as the Chinese Unicorn. He represents wisdom and cosmic harmony. During the Qing Dynasty, Qilins were made by every silversmith and even government workers assigned to create these. They were often given as wedding gifts to promote happiness and fertility.
This antique necklace features the two-sided Qilin with a happy, prosperous rider. It's made of 800/1000 Chinese silver (sterling 925/1000). A variety of customary dangles hang from chains beneath the Qilin. There are bells to frighten away evil spirits, fruits for fertility, seeds of life for longevity.
The chain is beaded with old carved carnelian, turquoise, and antique handmade silver beads, both plain and with a design.
The necklace measures 20 inches around. The Qilin measures 2 5/8 inches across by 4 1/2 inches high. The necklace weighs 85 grams. The hook clasp is a replacement but very similar to the original. Overall, this fascinating antique Chinese necklace is in excellent vintage condition.
