We usually associate cameo pins with carved shell and gold or silver but this old Victorian cameo was made to be a dress-up costume piece of jewelry. This antique cameo brooch is circa 1890s with a 'carved' celluloid woman's portrait.
The oval frame is made of clear paste rhinestones in a multi-prong setting.
The pin measures 2 by 2 5/8 inches. The back of the pin has its original ~C~ clasp. The back shows the nickel plating worn from the brass back. There's some verdigris and age-related tarnish that we have not attempted to clean. We leave the patina as found for buyer to decide whether to polish or not.
The front of the pin is still in very good+ condition. She's lovely, made of creamy French ivory...a form of celluloid. The stones are all still bright and intact. Overall, she's a large early cameo...and an unusual one.
