It would have been great to find just one but finding a pair was an antiquer's dream. This pair of old solid bronze Cherub figurines are HEAVY (about 14 pounds). They came from the estate of a woman in her 90s and her niece told us that she'd had these 'forever'.
We're not quite sure what their original purpose was but each figure has two holes on the bottom which indicate these might have been attached to a base, a piece of furniture, a bannister, or andirons...something pretty grand to warrant such impressive toppers.
These are both free standing but can tip forward if jostled. They'd make good bookends, facing each other, pushing against the books. They'd also make excellent doorstops though a base might be needed to be attached.
Each cherub measures 10 1/2 inches across by 9 inches high. They're about 3 1/4 inches wide at bottom. The faces are doll-like. The patina is a darkened bronze. You can see the original bronze color on the inside of the casting.
Each cherub has a number stamped over another number (both different). That appears to be the only marking. We date these to the 1920s though they might be earlier. This pair of leaf-wearing puttis are spectacular...a decorator's dream couple. Free domestic shipping is included in the price.
