This circa 1930s sterling silver necklace and earrings set was made in Siam, before the country's name was changed to Thailand (about 1939).
Crafted using a Niello metal technique, the necklace links and the matching fan earrings, have a charcoal gray color against which, the silver is etched to stand out on the darkened background. The dancing figures include a mermaid with a tail.
The necklace measures 16 inches end to end. It's 5/8 inch wide. The screwback earrings measure 1 1/8 inches across by 3/4 inch high. There's a small gap at the top filigree of one earring...barely noticed. The necklace is in excellent condition. These are marked SIAM STERLING. The total weight is 44.4 grams.
Very little Niello jewelry is currently made anywhere in Thailand. Unfortunately, there are almost no Niello craftsmen left to continue this old Siam / Thai tradition.
