This antique Victorian era English snuff box is hand-carved of ox horn with wood inside liners. The box has a long oval shape with a fitted lid. The most interesting part of the box is the hand on the lid that slides over to dispense the snuff or tobacco.
The box measures 2 1/4 inches high. It's 3 1/2 by 1 1/4 inches across the top. Over the decades, the box has had some dings to the bottom horn edges. This does not effect the functionality of the box which is solidly secured with the inner wood liner. The lid also has a wood liner which provides a tight fit. This is good for keeping contents safe but may require a little patience in wriggling the lid off to refill. The wood pieces are secured to the horn by small rivets.
This snuff box has a beautiful ivory-tone patina with all the natural nuances of the horn. The hand has all its fingers and slides over smoothly.
Back in the 19th Century, a box like this was an accessory that most men could not be without. A hand made box like this would have been an impressive one to keep in your pocket or on a desk. It was then...it still is now.
