These antique Chinese butterfly bell buttons make an unusual pair of cufflinks. These Qing Dynasty, late 1800s adornments were typical of the intricate silver work being made for wealthy commoners and members of the aristocracy . These handmade silver amulets (typically 900 silver) protected the wearer from evil spirits. Bells that jingled were believed to exorcise demons. Attached to clothing and tucked in pockets, these amulets and talismans were everywhere and on everyone who could afford them.
The repousse butterfly on each of these button cufflinks are symbolic of the 'Chinese Cupid', bringing longevity, joy and marital happiness. They are not a 'matched pair' because no two could ever be exactly alike because of their hand-crafted nature.
Each link butterfly measures about 7/8 by 5/8 inches. The bells are 10mm wide. The bells actually do jingle so their 'power' should still be effective, even after all these decades. These have been acid-tested for 900 silver. They're unpolished and in excellent antique condition. A rare pair of amulet button cufflinks.
